During the holidays, our routines and to-do lists are double booked as we balance our regular schedule with parties, shopping, and the rest of the season’s festivities. It’s easy to push back other goals or tasks in lieu of all the activities.
You may even find that you lose yourself in everything that is to be done and what about that furry friend? It is just as simple to lose track of all of Fido’s needs in the hustle and bustle as well. How can you know if your dog feels left out in the Christmas task list or in any other busy season of life? Dogs can get depressed and stressed just like we can.
There are symptoms to help you identify your pet’s anxiety, so be sure to watch out for these warning signs your dog could be lost in the hustle and bustle.
1. Changes in activity level
If your dog is usually really playful or particularly cuddly and you notice a shift in his mood, it could be because he feels left out. Depressed pets will usually stop interacting with their owners.
2. Changes in social interaction
Similarly to activity level, if your dog is moving slower and doesn’t show interest in his favorite toy, he may need some attention. Carve out a few minutes in the morning or run home on lunch to show him the love you still have for him.
If you notice a change in your dog's activity level, social interaction, or appetite, he may be getting lost in the hustle and bustle of the season. Be sure you to spend some extra time with your pet to show you still love him just as much as before.
3. Changes in appetite
A dog who has been lost in the hustle and bustle may make a change in his diet. He could either lose or increase his appetite, which could really affect his weight and overall health. Be sure you are maintaining his feeding schedule and be sure he is getting everything he needs.
4. Changes in sleep patterns
Depressed dogs also tend to sleep more, yet some may become restless and unable to sleep well. It’s hard to know when your dog is sleeping, since we can’t always be home with them. But, pay attention when you are home and compare his habits with his regular ones.
5. Changes in behavior
Dogs under stress will also show more subtle signs of anxiety such as whining, yawning, hiding, drooling, and lip licking. Again, it’s hard to know when your dog may be depressed over tired or hungry, but comparing his behavior with his more routine signs should help.
Is your dog showing any of the symptoms of stress or depression? How do you keep your pet from getting lost in the hustle and bustle?
