Warning: This post contains minor spoilers for Jurassic World.
The movie Jurassic World introduced one of the main characters by showing him clicker training velociraptors. Owen Grady, played by Chris Pratt, was able to clicker train 3 velociraptors at once with a loud clicker and a bucket of dead rats. They were obeying his commands perfectly and chaining several commands together.
If you can train a raptor, you could train almost any other animal! The steps for clicker training are basically the same for any animal.
Need tips for clicker training your cat, mouse, or velociraptor? Here are 5 articles about animals you might not know you can clicker train.
1. Cats - There's a persistent myth that cats are untrainable, when really all they need is the right motivation. Treat-motivated cats can learn the same commands dogs can learn. I bet your cat already knows some commands. Maybe she comes when she hears the can opener or the food bag? You've already proven you can get a specific behavior from your cat with a specific cue and motivation. Try it with a clicker and see what you can do together!
2. Mice - Plenty of movies feature well-trained mice, from Mousehunt and The Witches to The Green Mile. Hamsters, mice, rats, and other rodents can learn well with clicker training. You can teach them to navigate mazes and obstacle courses, and many love the challenge and reward at the end!
3. Chickens - Terry Ryan and Michelle Mullins have both tried their hands at chicken wrangling and training. They taught their chickens to chain several commands together.
4. Butterflies - Karen Pryor, a well-known clicker training advocate, was tasked with training butterflies for a botanical garden in the UK. The goal was to teach groups of butterflies to fly from point A to point B in sync with an orchestra. First she had to understand how the different butterfly species are motivated, and then she had to get them to exhibit the behavior to start shaping the behavior.
5. Velociraptors - Chris Pratt as Owen Grady showed off his awesome clicker training skills in Jurassic World. While his training techniques are a little different from standard clicker training practice, the fact that he taught several complex commands to velociraptors was pretty impressive. Apparently dead rats are a high value reward for raptors!
