Hoodsport, WA

Location of proposed dog park:

241 North Foothills Park Road
Hoodsport, WA 98548

About this community:

The Lake Cushman/Hoodsport community is located on the shores of the beautiful Hood Canal. It extends into the hills and mountains surrounding Lake Cushman and the foothills of the Olympic National forest. A dog park is desperately needed to provide a safe and secure location where residents and visitors can exercise and socialize their dogs. Unfortunately, there is only one other suitable dog park, and it is an hour’s drive away.

Why this community deserves a Bark for Your Park™ grant:

Lake Cushman/Hoodsport deserves to win a Bark for Your Park grant. This is what it means for one of our members. One of our members has cancer. Before approval of the land for a dog park, he was very limited in where he could go to exercise his dogs. In a completed park, he will be able to rest while watching his dogs, and at the end of play, they will be easier to control. Having his dogs is his lifeline. They offer him hope, unconditional love and joy in watching them play. He will also be able to socialize with many more of his neighbors and share pet care tips. So many people find solace in certain things as they face serious life challenges. This man finds hope in the joy of his pets.

How this community would use a Bark for Your Park™ grant:

The Lake Cushman/Hoodsport community will use grant money for a prioritized set of goals. Specifically, the fencing must be completed to keep dogs safe as they enjoy off-leash exercise. That will require approximately 625 feet of chain link fence. For access, there must be three standard entry gates, one for the main entrance and the others for large and small dog park access. There must be three sixteen-foot gates for maintenance. The total cost for construction will be between 18 to 24 thousand dollars. There must be water access to the park. The estimate is 7 thousand dollars. Four doggie poop bag dispensers with waste containers have already been purchased with money raised by a community yard sale. Additionally, future enhancements will include benches and shelters. Volunteers are ready to provide the extra support necessary to reach our goals by soliciting donations and memberships.
