It’s That Time Again: How to Prepare Your Dog for Flea & Tick Season

flea and tick protectionBy Natalie Lester, PetSafe Brand Marketing Specialist

Warmer weather means it is time to start protecting your pets from the pests of the season.

When the warm weather begins to peak thru the clouds, it’s time to start thinking about all the ways we need to protect our pets. Undoubtedly your pet will be spending more time outside, which means they will also be spending more time around harmful parasites like ticks, fleas and worms.

Most of the country has seen a very mild winter. So mild, in fact,  experts say bugs are already showing up earlier than usual and some predict they will be worse this summer than before. A flea or tick infestation could quickly ruin your and your dog’s spring or summer. Can you imagine spending all your lazy afternoons in the sun running to the vet's office or trying to keep your pet at peace indoors? I sure can’t, and the thought of the harmful side effects for Emma almost breaks my heart!

Be sure to start applying your flea/tick control medicine once a month if you don’t do it all year, or you can work to prevent pests naturally. If you choose the topical medication route, I found a great video from the ASPCA that demonstrates proper application of the topical treatment. Sometimes it can be tricky to get everything together at one time. It is hard enough to get dog to be still, and then they throw in trying to read a package? Watch this video before you begin to be sure you have all the steps in order.

Good luck! We hope you and your pet have a fun, safe summer together.
