About this community:

At 4,500 acres, Shelby Farms Park in Memphis, TN, is the largest urban park in the United States. Our popular 100+ acre Outback Off-Leash Dog Park is the largest in the region, uniquely combining open fields, ponds, and wooded trails. The Outback Dog Park is managed by the nonprofit Shelby Farms Park Conservancy, which raises 75% of the $5M it takes each year to run Shelby Farms Park and amenities like the Dog Park.

Why this community deserves a Bark for Your Park™ grant:

The Outback Off-Leash Dog Park is popular with not only dog parents but also nature lovers seeking the open outdoor spaces available in the area’s fields, ponds and wooded trails. The popularity of The Outback Dog Park has increased significantly as more people have sought safe outdoor spaces for themselves, their families and their pets to access fitness, recreation and nature. We are proud to be such a special resource for our community. More visitors and pups playing in this space have also increased our maintenance and upkeep costs. Growing this well-used and well-loved community asset to accommodate visitor growth will continue to be a shared community effort. Shelby Farms Park recreational areas like The Outback Off-Leash Dog Park are only possible with donor support and grants like Bark for Your Park. Caring for a big, shared space is a big, shared effort. We need your support and your vote!

How this community would use a Bark for Your Park™ grant:

Shelby Farms Park seeks Bark for Your Park funding to install additional visitor signage in the Outback Off-Leash Dog Park, which has taken on a greater urgency with increased use in these areas. Our goal is to create the safest space possible for all users (both human and canine) in The Outback Dog Park, while keeping this special area open and accessible to all. A Bark for Your Park grant will be used to install new signs in The Outback Dog Park that will help communicate usage guidelines and safety information. They will also help define boundaries for the footprint of this shared-use area, improving the experience and safety of all visitors. Signage will help remind all the Outback Dog Park users of the safety and usage rules and help keep everyone safe.
