Tomorrow you will probably be looking for a good way to store and get rid of the leftovers from your feast. You will also be really tempted to feed your dog from the table. To help, we recently offered our advice on how to keep your furry friend safe during your meal. We also had another idea. How about you fix your dog a Thanksgiving dinner of his own?
We found the recipe below and thought you would like it – your dogs will, too! (Recipe developed by Mary Straus, canine nutritionist, and Shawn Messonier, DVM; Jonna Anne published the recipe in The Bark magazine.)
Ingredients: 3 lbs. skinless turkey pieces (boneless light and dark meat) 1 cup oatmeal (cooked) 1 lb. sweet potatoes, cubed 2 tbsp. cranberry sauce 4 tbsp. turkey gravy (to reduce fat content, omit the gravy or substitute with olive oil)
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350° and lightly oil a roasting pan.
2. Cook turkey for 30-45 minutes, or until the meat juices run clear when pierced with a skewer. If using fresh sweet potatoes, roast with the turkey for about 25-30 minutes or until tender.
3. Allow the turkey and sweet potatoes cool. Then, dice the meat into large pieces.
4. Meanwhile, cook the oatmeal according to package instructions.
5. Mix the turkey meat, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, and cranberry sauce. If using gravy or olive oil, add it and mix thoroughly.
Nutritional Information (per one cup serving): Calories 321 Protein: 44 grams Carbohydrates: 16 grams Dietary fiber: 1.9 grams Fat: 7.7 grams (less if gravy is omitted)
For small dogs, put ¾ cup in their bowl. Medium dogs may have 1 ½ cup, and larger, more active dogs can enjoy 3 cups.
